ITL = inferior transverse ligament: fibrocartilaginous distal portion of the PITFL. Insertion: the posterior part of the lateral malleolus. Origin: the posterior (Volkmann’s) tubercle of the tibia. PITFL= posterior-inferior tibiofibular ligament. IOL= interosseous ligament: thickened distal part of the interosseous membrane. Insertion: anterior (Wagstaffe’s) tubercle of the fibula. AITFL= anterior-inferior tibiofibular ligament: Originate = anterolateral (Chaput’s) tubercle of the tibia. Distal tibiofibular syndesmosisconsists of: AITFL, IOL, interosseous membrane, PITFL, and ITL. Generally result from combined external rotation and dorsiflexion stress.
